Mistakes to Avoid While Renting A Car With Driver in Dubai

Most things that go wrong with a chauffeured booking in Dubai go wrong in the booking details, before anybody gets into a car. The chauffeur arrives at the wrong side of the building, the vehicle that turns up cannot take the luggage, or the block runs out an hour before the day does. Each of those has a specific cause and a specific fix, and none of them is about choosing the wrong company.

White Line Limousine LLC has dispatched chauffeured vehicles in Dubai since 2011, and the mistakes below are the ones our desk sees repeatedly. Every consequence named here traces back to a published rule, so you can check each one against our terms instead of taking our word for it.

The Details That Decide Whether the Car Finds You

Two mistakes account for most of the pickups that start badly.

Sending an estimated landing time instead of the flight number. This is the costly one, and almost nobody realises it. Airport arrivals carry sixty minutes of free waiting measured from the updated landing time, which means the clock follows the aircraft. Send a time instead and there is nothing to track, so a two-hour delay eats the waiting window and then the block. Send the flight number and the same delay simply moves your pickup.

Giving a district instead of a building and an entrance. “Dubai Marina” is forty towers. “Business Bay” is more. A chauffeur with a district has to guess, and the guess is usually the main road entrance when you are standing at the basement lift lobby. Name the tower, then name the entrance, and say which side of the building it is on if there are two. For hotels, say whether you want the porte-cochere or the lower ground pickup point, because at the larger properties those are several minutes apart on foot. On a hotel stand-by arrangement the pickup point is agreed once and then stops being a question.

At the airport, name the terminal. Dubai International has three and the arrival points are a long way from each other, which our limousine service at Dubai International Airport page sets out. An airport meet and greet removes the question entirely on a first visit.

The Details That Decide Which Car Arrives

Giving a passenger count without a bag count. The single most common cause of a vehicle that does not fit. Seats and luggage capacity do not rise together across a fleet, so a count of six tells us almost nothing on its own. The Mercedes V250 takes six passengers and five bags. The Citroen Spacetourer takes six passengers and seven bags. Same passenger count, two very different afternoons if you are arriving from Heathrow with a case each.

Give both numbers. If the bags are unusual, say so: golf clubs, a pushchair and a cot each load differently from suitcases of the same volume.

Not mentioning that a child is travelling. A child seat has to be fitted before the vehicle leaves, which means we need to know at the booking stage and not at the kerb. This is also a legal matter instead of a comfort one. Under UAE traffic rules, a child under four requires a child safety seat, and the penalty for travelling without one is AED 400 and four black points charged to the driver. Tell us the child’s age, and tell us if there are two.

The Timing Mistakes That Cost You the Block

Booking the pickup for the time of your meeting. A 9am meeting in DIFC needs an earlier pickup than 9am. Book the pickup for when you need to leave, allow for the journey honestly, and add something for the morning peak, when Salik gates are also at their AED 6 rate between 6am and 10am on weekdays.

Leaving a likely overrun until the end of the block. Overruns are charged at the vehicle’s hourly rate and, more importantly, they depend on that vehicle’s next commitment. A car already promised to another passenger at four o’clock cannot stay until five, however willing the chauffeur is. The moment you suspect the day will run long, say so, because an hour of notice usually solves it and ten minutes rarely does.

The Change and Cancel Mistakes

Both of these are in our terms, and both cost real money.

Making a change at short notice instead of early. An amendment requested at short notice is treated as a new booking alongside the original, so you can end up paying for both. A plan that moves is cheap to communicate on the day you learn about it and expensive to communicate the night before.

Cancelling inside the window. Cancellation is free twenty-four hours or more before pickup. Inside eight hours, or on a no-show, the booking is charged in full. If a trip looks shaky, make the call at the twenty-four hour mark instead of on the morning itself.

Our terms and conditions carry all of this in full, and every booking, change and cancellation generates a confirmation email, so the current arrangement is always in writing.

Two Mistakes About the Product Itself

Expecting a stretch limousine. We operate none, and that is deliberate. Dubai porte-cocheres have fixed turning circles, villa roads are narrow and basement car parks have length limits, so a stretch is the vehicle most likely to be refused at the entrance you wanted. A full-size SUV or a people carrier reaches places it cannot.

Booking a block of hours when you needed one journey, or the reverse. This is the mistake that costs the most money and the easiest one to avoid. If you can name the destination and you will not need the car again, book a point to point journey and pay for the trip. If the car has to wait for you, book hours. Two one-way journeys to cover a shopping trip costs more than an hourly block and leaves you waiting for the second car.

One piece of advice worth contradicting. An earlier version of this page suggested booking luxury services “without looking at the price”. That is poor guidance in the opposite direction from the usual mistake. Our rates are published, from AED 400 for a five-hour block, and comparing them against what they include is exactly what a customer should do. The thing to compare is not the headline figure but whether the fuel, the Salik tolls, the insurance, the VAT and the parking are inside it.

Questions We Get Asked

These are the questions that follow from the mistakes above, and every answer below traces to a published rule instead of a preference.

What Is the One Detail Most Worth Getting Right?

The flight number on an airport pickup. It converts a fixed booking into a tracked one and gives you sixty minutes of free waiting from the updated landing time, so a delayed flight moves your pickup instead of consuming it.

How Much Waiting Time Do I Actually Get?

Sixty minutes on airport arrivals from the updated landing time, and fifteen minutes on every other pickup. After that the vehicle’s hourly rate applies.

Can I Extend the Booking on the Day?

Usually, charged at the vehicle’s hourly rate and subject to that vehicle’s next commitment. Ask as early in the block as you can, because a car already promised elsewhere cannot stay.

What Happens if I Change the Booking the Night Before?

A short-notice amendment is treated as a new booking alongside the original. Tell us as soon as the plan changes and that outcome is usually avoidable.

Do I Need to Tell You About Children in Advance?

Yes. A child seat has to be fitted before the vehicle leaves, and a child under four requires one by law, with a penalty of AED 400 and four black points on the driver. Give us the age at the booking stage.

How Do I Know Which Vehicle to Ask For?

Do not ask for a vehicle. Give us the passenger count, the bag count and anything unusual among the bags, and we will name the car that takes all of it. Choosing by model name is how people end up with enough seats and nowhere for the cases.

Book It Properly the First Time

Send us six things and almost everything above disappears: the pickup address with the building and entrance, the destination, the date and start time, roughly how long you need the car, the passenger and bag counts, and a mobile number that works on a UAE network. Add the flight number if the booking starts at an airport, and the age of any child travelling.

We will come back with the vehicle, the rate and the block length that fits, and we will say if a different product costs you less. Rates include the chauffeur, the fuel, the Salik tolls, the insurance, the VAT and the parking, with airport parking as the only exclusion.
