Travel Tips for UK Travelers in Dubai

British citizens get a visitor visa on arrival in the UAE with no advance application, and the allowance is up to ninety days across any one-hundred-and-eighty-day period, well beyond the thirty days often quoted. Your passport needs at least six months left on it from the date you land. Dubai sits on UTC+4 all year, which puts it three hours ahead of the UK through British Summer Time and four hours ahead once the clocks go back.

Two things make a British visitor different from any other arrival, and both are about transport. You drive on the left at home. The UAE drives on the right. White Line Limousine LLC has moved British visitors and expatriates around Dubai since 2011, and this guide covers the entry rules worth checking, the driving rules that catch UK licence holders, and the one piece of packing that gets people stopped at the airport.

Entry: The Ninety-Day Allowance

The UK Foreign Office entry requirements for the UAE, updated on 7 October 2026, set this out clearly for holders of a full British citizen passport.

A visitor or tourist visa is issued on arrival. No application before travel is needed.

The stay runs up to ninety days across a one-hundred-and-eighty-day period, counted from your first entry. A thirty-day figure circulates widely, including in earlier guidance on this page, and it understates what you are entitled to.

Overstaying carries fines that can accumulate daily, so the ninety-day ceiling is worth tracking if you are coming and going across a season.

Your passport needs six months of validity from your arrival date. If you already hold a UAE residence permit the requirement drops to three months.

The Time Difference Changes With British Summer Time

Dubai observes no daylight saving at any point in the year, so the gap between British and Dubai time changes twice annually while Dubai itself stays exactly where it is on UTC+4.

Through British Summer Time, Dubai is three hours ahead. Through the winter, when the UK is on GMT, it is four hours ahead. The earlier version of this page had the summer figure wrong, which is worth correcting plainly, because a British reader setting a meeting from the UK gets it an hour out.

This matters for one practical reason. A flight leaving the UK in the morning lands in Dubai in the evening. A flight leaving in the evening lands in the small hours. Check which one you have booked before you commit to anything the next morning, and send us the flight number either way so the car tracks the aircraft rather than a guess.

You Drive on the Left at Home. The UAE Drives on the Right.

This is the single most consequential practical difference for a British visitor arriving in the UAE, and almost every travel guide written for this audience skips past it in a clause.

Swapping sides is manageable on a quiet road. It is considerably harder on a multi-lane interchange in an unfamiliar city, where the instinct that keeps you safe at home becomes the wrong one. Dubai’s junctions are large, and the exit you want sits on the side your reflexes have spent decades ignoring.

For a trip of a week or two the honest arithmetic favours a chauffeur. That is why many short-stay British visitors who try both end up booking a car with a driver in Dubai for the rest of the stay. You are removing the one variable you have no practice at.

If you do intend to drive, give it a quiet first hour somewhere undemanding before you take on Sheikh Zayed Road.

The Rules That Catch UK Licence Holders

Three differences between British and UAE roads account for most of the trouble British licence holders get into here, and each one surprises them for a slightly different reason.

The speed tolerance varies by emirate. Dubai and the northern emirates allow a buffer of 20 km/h above the posted limit. Abu Dhabi removed its buffer in 2018, so the posted number there is the enforced number. A driver who has learned Dubai habits and then takes the chauffeur route to Abu Dhabi is the classic case.

Tolls are automatic. Dubai’s Salik gates have been variably priced since 31 January 2025: AED 6 during the weekday peaks of 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm, AED 4 outside them, nothing between 1am and 6am, and AED 4 all day on Sundays. On a chauffeured booking they sit inside the published rate.

Child seat rules are stricter than you may be used to. A child under four requires a child safety seat. The front seat requires both 145cm in height and ten years of age. The penalty is AED 400 and four black points on the driver.

Medication Needs Checking Before You Pack

This is the item most likely to cause you a serious problem at the border, and it catches British travellers carrying prescriptions they have refilled at home for years without a second thought.

Medication classed as narcotic, psychotropic, controlled or semi-controlled requires approval from the UAE Ministry of Health obtained in advance. The Foreign Office notes that applications are normally processed within five working days. Without approval the medication may be refused entry and you may be prosecuted.

Visitors may bring up to three months’ supply, reduced to one month for medicines on the approval list. Codeine-based painkillers sit in the category worth checking. They are sold over the counter in the UK, which is exactly why nobody thinks to check them.

Start this five working days before you fly, at the latest.

If You Are Moving Here, Your Licence Can Be Exchanged

Britain sits on the UAE’s recognition list, so a UK licence holder taking up residence can exchange it for a UAE licence without sitting lessons or a driving test.

The process still takes time. You need the documents, a mandatory eye test, and an appointment with the licensing authority for your emirate. That interval between landing and holding a UAE licence is a real gap, and it is when a standing chauffeured arrangement earns its money for the daily commute.

Licensing is administered by emirate, so you apply where you live and not where you work. Dubai runs through the Roads and Transport Authority, Abu Dhabi through the TAMM platform, and Sharjah and the northern emirates through Ministry of Interior e-services.

Check your own eligibility at the source instead of relying on any article, this one included. The recognition list changes by bilateral agreement, and published counts of the countries on it disagree with each other considerably.

Questions We Get Asked

These are the questions British visitors and new arrivals put to us most often, and two of them exist because the wrong answer is so widely repeated online.

Do British Citizens Need a Visa for Dubai in Advance?

No. A visitor visa is issued on arrival with no application beforehand, and the allowance is up to ninety days across a one-hundred-and-eighty-day period from first entry. Your passport needs six months of validity from the date you arrive.

Is Dubai Four Hours Ahead of the UK?

Only in winter. Dubai stays on UTC+4 year round, so it is four hours ahead while the UK is on GMT and three hours ahead through British Summer Time.

Can I Drive in Dubai on My UK Licence as a Tourist?

Options depend on the rental company and your status, so confirm it with the operator before booking a self-drive car. The more useful point is that the UAE drives on the right, which is the part UK visitors underestimate. A chauffeured booking removes the question, and no licence is needed to be a passenger.

How Long Does Exchanging a UK Licence Take?

Longer than a day, since no lessons or test are required for an eligible holder. The variables are document gathering, the mandatory eye test and appointment availability at your emirate’s authority. Plan for days.

Can I Bring My Prescription Medication?

Check it first. Anything narcotic, psychotropic, controlled or semi-controlled needs advance Ministry of Health approval, normally processed within five working days, and travelling without it risks refusal of entry or prosecution. Visitors may carry up to three months’ supply, or one month for medicines on the approval list.

What Is Included in a Chauffeured Rate?

The chauffeur, the fuel, the Salik tolls, the insurance, the VAT and the parking, with airport parking as the only exclusion. Our terms and conditions carry the waiting, amendment and cancellation detail in full.

Arriving at DXB

Send the flight number at the point of booking instead of an estimated landing time, because the number is what lets us track the aircraft rather than guess at it. The aircraft is then tracked, and airport arrivals carry sixty minutes of free waiting measured from the updated landing time, so a delay out of Heathrow or Manchester moves your pickup rather than costing you it. Every other pickup carries fifteen minutes.

An airport meet and greet earns its fee on a first visit, arriving late with luggage into an airport you do not know. For a family with cases the Citroen Spacetourer takes six passengers and seven bags. Check that combination rather than the seat count, since the two do not rise together across a fleet.

Our Dubai airport transfer service covers the arrival, and a Dubai city tour is the usual first full day. Cancellation is free twenty-four hours or more before pickup.
